DinaRis

Northern Dinaric Alps are a large, well preserved area of an exceptional conservation value. Extensive forests that cross state borders without visible boundaries, provide refuge to many important European endangered animal and plant species, many of which are not found anywhere else. Nevertheless, there no notable international co-operation in conservation and management of this natural wealth and only individual contacts between researchers and conservationists exised. Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a sensitive species and an important representative of the Dinaric fauna. The protection and management of the Eurasian lynx requires a complex approach at population level. Because it is a sensitive and a charismatic species, this cat represents a suitable challenge for the establishment of a cross-border nature protection cooperation. In the DinaRis project we gained important biological and sociological insights, developed tools to monitor the population and established partnerships at the highest scientific and  managemet levels. All of this led to the fulfillment of one of the most important goals of the project, the preparation of the joint management strategy for the lynx, the first such document between Slovenia and Croatia. This network of partnerships enabled a coordinated and complex lynx conservation effort on short term and forms the basis for coordinated protection and management of natural heritage that these two countries share on long term.
